Tiger Times Staff Members Conduct Journalism Workshops at Breckenridge Elementary School for the Second Year

On May 20, Tiger Times staff members conducted a journalism workshop at Breckenridge Elementary School, marking the second year that they’ve worked to bring journalism to 4th and 5th grade classrooms. Last year, staff members conducted a series of workshops for Breckenridge Elementary’s students. The workshops were created in an effort to expand the Tiger Times’ outreach and introduce younger students to the field of journalism and a new form of writing. 

The workshop, which consists of a short lesson on the basics of writing articles and a hands-on activity for the young students, has seen great success. In the workshops, students learned how to conduct interviews and write informative and factual articles based on the information they gathered in class. 

Next year, the Tiger Times hopes to extend its journalism workshops to other schools, including Dillon Valley and Silverthorne — both of which have Dual Language programs. 

The Tiger Times was created with the goal of making journalism accessible to all members of the Summit County community. Each article that is written in English for the Tiger Times is translated and published into Spanish as well. 

Dual Language staff members have begun making plans to translate the workshop into Spanish for the following school year. This workshop expansion will not only furhter increase the Tiger Times’ outreach, but it will also increase volunteer opportunities for SHS’ National Spanish Honor Society members, who will be able to conduct the workshops in Spanish to earn volunteer hours.

“My hope is that, next year, Tiger Times staff members will be able to conduct even more workshops at a variety of elementary schools,” senior Sofia Timpone said. 

The Tiger Times workshops have not only been a way for younger students to be exposed to a new form of writing, however, but they’ve also been a great learning opportunity for the staff members themselves. 

“So far, the workshops have been super fun to conduct,” Sofia said. “I’ve actually learned a lot about journalism and the students through the workshops.”

Staff members have learned to command a group of younger students and explain concepts in a more simple way, which has been a great way for them to reinforce basic skills and knowledge.

As rising junior Fransesca Timpone and rising senior Kyla Salthouse prepare to take over the Tiger Times next year, they’ve already begun to make plans to conduct workshops in the fall and spring. Francesca is particularly excited about the prospect of conducting workshops in Spanish.

“The journalism workshops mean a lot to me,” Francesca (who's been conducting the workshops since her freshman year) said. “The kids are so fun to teach because they’re so curious.”
